Nigel Williams
Mr Nigel Williams, the first Commissioner for Children and Young People for Northern Ireland, died on the 28th March 2006 at his home in Glenarm following a two-year battle against illness.
On 26th June 2003 Nigel Williams was announced as the first Commissioner for Children and Young People for Northern Ireland and took up appointment on 1st October 2003.
The main aim of the Commissioner is to safeguard and promote the rights and best interests of children and young people.
In a press statement the Secretary of State said;
“Nigel was appointed as Northern Ireland’s first Commissioner for Children and Young People in October 2003. It was particularly fitting for a son of Northern Ireland to come back home to take up this challenging and prestigious post. Nigel’s appeal to children and young people was immediately evident when those involved in his appointment gave him an overwhelming seal of approval. He was a real Children’s Champion.
I am confident that he has laid the foundation and set the framework within which future Commissioners will work.”
We in the Children and Young People’s Unit feel very privileged to have been involved in Nigel’s appointment and to have worked with him over the last two and a half years.
